Dairy Farm

In the beginning, breast feeding was definitely a challenge for me. There were numerous freak outs that first weekend and "oh my God Mason is going to DIE because my milk is not in yet". It took almost 5 days before my milk came in and I was able to avoid engorgement but dealt with some sore nipples, God bless Lanolin. Low and behold, he wasn't dying, not even close. He gained 3 ounces of his weight back in 4 days, so he was getting something.

I never intended to breast feed for very long, maybe 2 months. I am just not one of those women that you see nursing their children until preschool (no offense). Call me selfish if you will, but I just never saw myself nursing for an extended period of time. Now that I am at 5 weeks and counting of nursing during the day (he gets formula at night to help him sleep longer) and thinking/starting to wean slowly, I am questioning myself. Nursing has gotten considerably easier, especially since the gremlin has become quite efficient and is no longer pulling marathon nursing sessions. Plus, and this is MAJOR, I am saving a shit-ton of money by not exclusively using formula. Also, feeding Mason via boob is something that no one else shares with us. It is our little special time and I feel so close to him when he nurses knowing that I am the only one that can provide that for him.

That is also a HUGE negative for me- I am the only one that can nurse him. Yes, I pump so Paul/anyone else can feed him but pumping takes up twice the amount of time and needs to be timed correctly = hassle. I am going to slowly wean him off of breastfeeding, I am actually down to nursing him only 3-4 times a day now since he is going 4 hours in between meals. I will say that it is very discouraging out there for mothers who choose to stop nursing or mothers who choose to never nurse at all. People will really make you feel like crap! I started reading all of these articles in attempt to learn how to properly wean and ended up almost in tears because I felt like I was a horrible mother for GASP! wanting to start giving my overly-hungry son a bottle. What ever happened to supporting everyone's decisions?

Splish Splash and Fun Feedings

Two Sundays ago, Mason was given his first bath. I was so excited when his umbilical stump fell off because I had been looking forward to giving the little guy a bath. Not because he was stinky or anything, it just seemed fun. HA! This was also the Sunday when we started noticing a little bit of diaper rash on him that would soon turn into FULL FLEDGED OUCHIE diaper rash, which is now looking tons better thanks to Aunt Chrissy's remedy.

At first, he seemed to like the bath and it's warm goodness on his little butt...

But that soon turned into "HOLY HELL the water is getting chilly and I am cold now get me out of here cruel vile people!"

Soon followed with "is it over? I am scared to look. Is the tubby gone?"

"Ahh yes. Warm towel. All done I presume. Now fetch me a boob."

So there you have it. He likes his baths at first, but as soon as the water temperature is not up to his highness' standards anymore, he screams bloody murder until we get him out. He really is such a good baby. He never cries just to cry. He only cries because one of the following things is wrong:

-dirty diaper
-hungry
-fighting sleep
-wants mommy/sick of daddy or wants daddy/sick of mommy
-gas bubble

He actually slept 3 hours in between feedings last night. Praise Jeebus. Hopefully this sticks at night. For the past almost 3 weeks, he had only been sleeping 2 hours from the start of one feeding to the start of the next. He was also doing marathon nursing sessions lasting sometimes 45 minutes. For example, he wakes up at 2am, I change him (5 mins), feed him (30-45 mins) and rock him back to sleep (10 mins), taking about an HOUR total putting us at 3am. We sleep until 4am (AN HOUR people) before he is up and hungry again. EEK.

He is finally cutting down the nursing to 15 minutes and passing out at the last burp. So the diaper change, nursing, burp and rocking to sleep has went down from one hour to about 20-30 minutes and then he doesn't eat again for another 2.5 hours. SO.MUCH.BETTER. I can only hope it gets shorter and shorter!

Your weekly update.

33w 6d

I am starting to think that maybe I should have had a little better foresight when I scheduled my prenatal massage appointments. I have my last session tonight (boo) and of course this week has been hell on my back. Sitting at work is no longer fun, my tailbone feels like it might poke through my skin, and my lower back is just an annoyance at this point. Boy must be getting big.

On the flip side, if I would have scheduled later appointments then laying on the table might have been such a hassle that the massages probably would have been less-than-enjoyable. Not that the massages have been completely relaxing with a ninja-baby inside of me. What's that mom? You're going to lay on your side and relax now? PERFECT timing to practice my round-house kicks.

The feet are back to normal, which only means one thing since the weather has been pretty consistent: Ninja baby was laying on something, pinching something off and loving it. I am no longer forced to make every outfit match with the Croc sandals, as comfortable as they are, they are HUGE on my normally-petite feet.

What else, what else. OH, while glancing into my bra cup this morning I noticed a small round circle of what at one time was probably some leakage. I am not sure when this occurred (sometime since the weekend) so now I am all paranoid that I will begin squirting at inappropriate times. Lovely. And I dreamed about Agent Orange last night and woke up in another almost-crying fit. That's all I am giving you this time. It is getting too ridiculous to write about.

Ju-LIES!

30w 5d

Hello July! So nice to see you. Your appearance can only mean one thing, right? That my precious, lovely, not-too-big but not-too-small, stork-dropped, sleeping all night from the beginning, never-pooping, never-crying, completely self-sufficient from the beginning BABY is coming in less than 2 months, RIGHT? Right. What are those laughs, Internet? Why are you laughing at me? I didn't say anything funny. This is what happens after 10 full months of carrying a baby, right? They fall out of you without you even knowing and then your body immediately goes back to its pre-pregnancy size, or even smaller, correct?

That means I can stop trolling the web for the not-so-fun products and ideas I will need for after his delivery, right? So I won't need to buy stock in Shrek-sized double thick, extra absorbent woman diapers? Super.

No need for the dairy cow milker? Or the completely covered to HEY BOOBIES! in less than .5 seconds bra?

What about this little find? What about this gem that I found on Lil Sugar today? It's a frozen condom pop. Can you imagine your husband's surprise to find these guys lining the innards of your freezer? And no, that's not what you do with it, although the thought briefly crossed my sick mind as well. Just lay this puppy in your undies and ahhhhhh soothing relief. Although I am not sure how sitting would go, but I am sure I would have wanted to try anything, right July? That is, IF I would have needed these products/ideas.

What's that July? "Bwahaha continue shopping oh naive pregnant one?" Is that what you said? Watch your back July. That goes for you too, August. I may just be armed with frozen condoms and I bet they hurt.

It just keeps happening.

27w 5d

I'd like to think that I'm not bad to look at, or so I've been told. I'm not one to fish for compliments by going around complaining that "I feeeel soooo ugly and faaaat!!!" pregnant or not. I am also not one to stand in front of a mirror for hours on end brushing my hair Marsha Brady-style and fish for compliments by saying, "My hair is pretty, don't you think my hair is pretty?". Men (and some women) look at me. I know this. My mom, Paul, friends have pointed this out to me. I never really noticed before.

Now, I DO notice. I notice that they see my face, look down at the belly and immediately look away. It keeps happening everywhere I go. Just last week I went to Chipotle and it happened TWICE! The first time was as I was parking. Some younger boys saw me in my car (belly unseen of course) and started making googly eyes at me. Then as soon as I stepped out of the car, belly in full force, they looked away. Obviously scared of catching pregnancy by staring for too long. The same way a laser beam permanently damages you retinas. The same thing happened, this time by men in business suits inside the restaurant as I was waddling to order my food.

I'm thinking about carrying a brush in my purse so I can stand in front of these men brushing my hair and proclaiming, "My hair is pretty. Don't you think I'm pretty? Stop looking down. FOCUS! Eyes up here! Look how magnificent my new boobs are!"

Nervously fumbles with keyboard...

26w 4d

Hehe, um hi. So last week I was reading this article on Lil Sugar and I must say that it made my stomach hurt. No, that's not even the right way to put that. It literally made me feel uneasy, embarrassed, furious and insanely sad. The article was a bit vague on what the woman actually said to her mother in law after the fact, but I can tell you that I would have reacted a bit differently.

Screaming comes to mind. And a lifetime of possibly not speaking to, or at least avoiding my mother-in-law. I am all for breastfeeding, we have already covered this. What I will not stand for is someone else shoving their boob in my son's face and trying to feed him without asking. That last bit is funny to me since even if someone asked I would probably be immediately offended.

"Can you WHAT?! Go fly a kite!"

You see, I didn't even know that Cross Nursing existed until I read that article. So, in true Tiff form, I did some research. I get the whole thing about a mother not being able to breastfeed due to complications, medical reasons, etc. but it still gives me the heeby-jeebys. Apparently this is a common practice in some places, but I just can't stomach it. There are plenty of diseases that can be transmitted through breast milk including HIV. I guess this is my major problem with it - since I no way consider breastfeeding perverted, sexual, etc, which lets face it, is the problem that MANY people in this world have with it whether they realize it or not. That is a whole 'nother post, whole 'nother day!

So the explanation of my feelings towards cross-feeding would have to be, my kid, my decision. This could also be classified as "Your ass better ask me before you pull something like that with my child". Also included would have to be "is it healthy?". In my mind, no it is not. You would need several in-depth medical checks to feed my child - including some not-so-fun probing. GAH I'm kidding. Okay, not really.

Didya know? Boobs.

24w 5d

This is the point in my pregnancy where I grow imaginary balls. I don't know if it is because BL's testicles have been making their descent from his abdomen recently, or if it's from all of the crazy hormones running through my body, but I feel more brave than ever. Not jump-off-a-bridge brave, don't get anxious, but definitely more brave. A few of my upcoming posts will demonstrate this fact for you. There are a couple things I want you to keep in mind while reading my blog though: This is a blog. This is also MY blog, where I can write pretty much whatever I want. Therefore, the opinions expressed are solely my own. But hear this, good people of the Internets - I do not speak wildly without doing my research first. That's pretty much how I roll (as Colleen would say). I am presented with a topic, I research and form and opinion, and lately I tell people about it.

For my first demonstration, I will be playing with my Pam Anderson boobs. Not really, but let's chat about them, shall we? My new balls are allowing me to give you some insight into my head and what decisions, mostly the controversial ones, I have made regarding my pregnancy and the upbringing of my son. This is going to be so fun! I hear your popcorn popping! Lots of butter, now.

Didya know that breasts make milk? I know, crazy right?! Turns out they have been since like, forever. Odd enough, they do this for a reason and guess what? This is going to blow your mind - it is actually beneficial to encourage your young offspring to drink that milk. I guess at one point, according to my mom, I described breast-feeding as gross and stated that I would NEVER partake. I guess this was before I started researching-before-speaking.

There are so so so SO many benefits to breast-feeding and as far as I can see, no negatives. It can protect your baby from gastrointestinal problems, ear infections, respiratory problems, allergies, childhood leukemia, type I diabetes, SIDS, and has been shown to boost intelligence, and help protect from obesity later in life (by developing healthier eating patterns). It doesn't stop there. It helps the mom too by burning calories and assisting in losing the baby weight at a faster rate and also has shown to reduce some cancers and osteoporosis.

All those positives and yet you still hear people who don't even want to try because it's "icky" or "too hard". They don't even try. This blows my mind. I understand a lot of women just can't breastfeed because of various reasons, but there is help out there. Obviously I am going to give it a try. This is something that I really want to do for my child. If pregnancy has taught me anything it is that I do know how to be an unselfish person. This is for my child. This is not entirely about me and there are so many other decisions I have made for this exact reason. I find it hard to take someone seriously when they make selfish decisions while pregnant. You'll see this in black and white in my upcoming posts.

How was your popcorn? Keep a stash handy!

Here she goes again.

20w 4d

I don't know why, but I always feel the need to apologize before I write posts like this. So, here I go: I am sorry men. Men who know me, have known me since I was little, etc. I am sorry Paul's family; although somehow I know you will all get a kick out of this. I am sorry Paul. I am sorry I am airing out some probably-embarrassing-for-you-but-hilarious-to-me comments you have made this past weekend.

My husband was hilarious this weekend. I don't know what he was smoking, but he was funny as hell. Not that hell is in the least bit funny. We decided that it is because we took the day off Friday and he was able to actually relax and emerge from the fog that work sometimes puts him in. It could have also been because of the circumstances Friday and how it was agreed to be the second best day of our lives (behind our wedding day).

After the doctor appointment on Friday, I made Paul tag along to all men's favorite place on earth: Victoria's Secret. I love when I see men there. They all follow so closely to the woman they are with like lost puppy dogs. I am sure they fear the moment that they hear, "Okay, I am going to go try this on.". I mean, what the hell are they supposed to do for those 5 minutes? Try on lotion?

Of course I ended up buying a HUGE bra. HUGE for me at least. And I am sure it will only get bigger. Once we left the store, Paul was all, "How can we keep your boobs this big?" and I was all, "I can have back to back kids, get implants, or breastfeed your son until his is 15. Your choice."
I am convinced that my boobs are the size of Pam Anderson's...at one point in time.

Fun Bags

8w6d

**warning - if you do not wish to hear about my boobs, please skip down to the part that says "Safe"**

Okay Holy Huge Boobs Batman. All of my life I have loathed the lucky ones that got nice boobs. I was a dancer for the majority of my childhood and I kept dancing right through puberty and of course, my boobs just never showed up. I have noticed over the last couple days that my fun bags are now in full effect y'all. Last night when we went to bed I was complaining to Paul that when I lay on my side I have to pick up my boob and lay it on my arm or it gets lost in my armpit. Ahh the joys of pregnancy. I know you are all imagining me with some Pam Anderson triple D's right now, which totally isn't the case. See, when you start out with a mid-B and all of the sudden are creeping around in the C's, you think they are big. And yes, I know they will only get bigger so save your breath now.

**SAFE** (I think)
I am also now officially uncomfortable in jeans. I notice now when I wear my regular jeans with my tummy sleeve (let's you leave your button undone, and zipper if you're feeling frisky) I get bloated a lot easier and when I lean forward I can hear my zipper going down. FUN! On the other hand, when I wear maternity pants, or sweat pants, since there is no pressure, the bloat stays down. Or maybe I don't notice it?

Meat is also now officially grossing me out. I thought it was just raw meat, but it is also when it's cooked as well. I am forcing myself to choke down some chili that is full of turkey and sausage today. Chicken I can no longer do and I haven't tried steak yet. Of course fish (especially salmon) is not my friend right now either. I need to find alternative resources of the the good-for-you that meat provide. Any suggestions? Leave em' in the comments please!
